What is junk bond?

A junk bond is a bond with a rating of BB or lower that is a high risk for those taking it. They are called such because they are essentially considered "junk" thus a junk bond. These junk bonds are also known as high yield bonds and speculative bonds. Junk bonds have high yields because of their poor bond rating.
